Visiting Barcelona for the first time and wondering where to stay? In this guide, we share our recommendation for the best area to stay in Barcelona for sightseeing, together with hand-picked hotels for different budgets and practical tips based on our trips.

For a first visit to Barcelona, we recommend staying around Plaça de Catalunya, including the streets toward nearby Plaça Universitat. This central area sits between the old town and Eixample, within walking distance of the Gothic Quarter, La Rambla, and several famous Gaudí houses. You’ll also find plenty of shops, restaurants, and convenient transportation connections.

This is also a great base for day trips, with some guided tours to places like Montserrat departing from this area.

We’ve stayed in several different neighborhoods in Barcelona, and based on our experience, this area is hard to beat for first-time visitors. You can explore much of the city center on foot, easily get to attractions farther away, and return to your hotel for a break between sightseeing. It’s a very convenient base when you want to make the most of your time.

PRO TIP: Compare a few hotels for your actual dates before deciding. Prices can vary enormously, and a 4* hotel may sometimes cost little more than a simpler option nearby. Barcelona is extremely popular, so for the best prices and availability, book your accommodation as soon as your travel dates are set.

How Many Days Do You Need in Barcelona?

For a first visit to Barcelona, I would plan at least 2 full days, preferably 3 or 4. This gives you time for the main Gaudí sights, the old town, and a few other places without having to fit everything into one long day.

Whatever the length of your stay, a convenient hotel location makes a big difference. This is especially true on a short trip, when you don’t want to spend a large part of each day getting to and from your hotel.

The Best Area to Stay in Barcelona + Map

So, where exactly is the best place to stay in Barcelona?

Barcelona has a huge choice of hotels and accommodations, but for a first visit, we recommend staying around Plaça de Catalunya (Plaza Catalunya), including the streets toward the nearby Plaça Universitat. You don’t have to stay right on either square, of course. Look for a hotel within about a 5–10-minute walk of Plaça de Catalunya.

This area puts you between the old town and Eixample, making it easy to explore different parts of the city. The Gothic Quarter, Palau de la Música Catalana (a must-see!), La Rambla, shops, restaurants, and several famous Gaudí houses are all within walking distance. It’s also easy to get here from the airport, either by metro with a transfer or by direct airport bus.

Our experience: We’ve stayed in several different neighborhoods in Barcelona, and this is the area we would choose again without hesitation. We love exploring on foot, and when we stay here, we walk almost everywhere and hardly ever need public transportation. Being able to head out for sightseeing, stop for dinner, and walk back to our hotel makes everything so much easier. For our next city trip to Barcelona, we wouldn’t even consider staying anywhere else.

Good to know: Barcelona’s attractions are spread out, so walking everywhere won’t suit everyone. For places farther away, such as Park Güell or Sagrada Família, it’s best to take the metro, a bus, or a taxi. Staying here gives you convenient options whenever you need them.

Our recommendations are listed roughly from most expensive to most affordable. Keep in mind that prices can vary a lot depending on your travel dates. Even simpler accommodation can be expensive during busy periods, while luxury hotels can be surprisingly affordable in the off-season.

• Hotel 1898: a 4* hotel with a rooftop pool and spa on La Rambla, about a 5–10-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya. Set in a historic building, it has traditionally styled rooms, a rooftop terrace with fantastic city views, and an indoor spa pool. TIP: Ask for a quieter room if you’re a light sleeper, as La Rambla is busy.

• Hotel Jazz: a popular and excellent-value 3* hotel with a rooftop terrace and pool near Universitat, about a 5-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya. With modern rooms and excellent guest reviews, it’s worth comparing with Acta Splendid if you’d like a few extra facilities.

• Hotel Acta Splendid: our personal value pick, a 3* hotel near Plaça Universitat, about a 10-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya. We stayed here on a family trip and found the value for money excellent for such a central location. It’s a comfortable, convenient base if you plan to spend most of your time exploring the city.

• TOC Hostel Barcelona: a modern hostel with an outdoor pool and terrace near Universitat, about a 10-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya. It offers both shared dorms and private rooms. Dorm beds are a good option on a lower budget, but compare private-room prices with regular hotels before booking.

• Hotel Lloret Ramblas: a simple budget hotel with private rooms at the top of La Rambla, just steps from Plaça de Catalunya. Rooms have air conditioning and private bathrooms, and there’s a 24-hour reception. It’s worth considering if you want a super central location without paying for extra hotel facilities.

Advantages of Staying near Plaça de Catalunya

Here are just some of the main advantages of staying in the area around Plaça de Catalunya:

• You can explore much of central Barcelona on foot. The Gothic Quarter, La Rambla, La Boqueria, and Palau de la Música Catalana are all within walking distance. In the other direction, you can walk up Passeig de Gràcia to Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. • Airport transfers are straightforward. The Aerobús connects Barcelona–El Prat Airport with Plaça de Catalunya. Staying nearby, you can simply walk to your hotel, which makes arrival and departure easier, especially with luggage.

• Good transport connections for longer distances. You can walk to many sights from this area, but places like Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Montjuïc are farther away. With several metro stations and plenty of bus routes nearby, it’s easy to reach them by public transportation.

• Shops, cafés, and restaurants are close by. You’ll find plenty of options for breakfast, a quick lunch, or dinner within walking distance. The El Corte Inglés department store is right on Plaça de Catalunya, and popular shopping streets such as Passeig de Gràcia and Portal de l’Àngel are just steps away.

• It’s easier to return to your hotel between activities. Being able to drop off shopping, change before dinner, or take a break can be very useful, especially in summer or when traveling with children. TIP: Book a hotel with a pool if traveling in the summer season.

• It’s a practical base for sightseeing tours and excursions. Many guided tours and day trips outside the city start in this area. Disadvantages & Tips for Choosing Your Hotel

For a first sightseeing trip, I find the convenience of this location hard to beat. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

• It can be expensive. Accommodation in this central area can be pricey, especially during busy periods. That said, there are options for different budgets, and looking just a few blocks farther from the square can help you find better value. For us, the convenience of being able to walk almost everywhere makes it worth paying a little more, especially with the time and transportation costs we save.

• The area is busy. Plaça de Catalunya is a major transport and shopping hub, and the entire area attracts crowds throughout the day. For a quieter stay, read recent reviews about soundproofing and ask about rooms facing an interior courtyard. Check air conditioning too, so you won’t need to keep the windows open at night. The immediate surroundings of Plaça de Catalunya feel more commercial than the small squares and historic streets of the Gothic Quarter or El Born. For us, however, the convenient location matters more than the atmosphere right outside the hotel.

• Not every attraction is on your doorstep, but that’s true no matter where you stay in Barcelona. Sagrada Família and Park Güell are farther away, and if you plan to spend most days on the beach, you may prefer accommodation closer to the sea. But for a trip focused on sightseeing, the convenience of Plaça de Catalunya is hard to beat.

• Check room details before booking. Rooms at the same hotel can vary considerably in size, layout, and views. Always read the description and check the photos of the specific room category you’re booking.

PRO TIP: Before paying extra for a rooftop pool or spa, check opening dates, access conditions, and any age restrictions. Those facilities are only worth the additional cost if you will be able to use them during your stay.
