Do you also find that choosing a perfect gift is becoming more and more challenging these days? Whether you are looking for a present for your significant other, your kids, your parents, siblings, or your colleagues – it is a haunting task to find a perfect gift for everyone.

Every birthday, every holiday season I spend hours looking for new trends, innovative gift ideas, useful and practical gifts that will be appreciated and used time and again. Because let’s face it, the most difficult part in finding the perfect gift is finding an idea.

After some research, this holiday season I decided to go with the top new trends in travel for Christmas gifts. Here is my selection of the top travel gifts for 2017 – 2018, featuring some of the newest gadgets, recent trends, as well as some timeless must-haves. This travel-themed list will give you plenty of new gift ideas for 2018. For those of you who came to this post because of the picture of cute chocolate-filled houses, a box of good chocolate is a timeless gift that you cannot go wrong with on any occassion.

And the best part is that all (but one) of these gifts are under 100USD, most – under 50USD. At the bottom of this post I also included some travel-themed stocking filler ideas under 10 USD, also for the children.

If you are looking for non-toy gifts for kids, I honestly think that books still make some of the best gifts. The Best Gift Ideas for Travellers – Top New Picks for 2018

Anti-theft backpack

With cut-proof design, hidden zippers, secret pockets, water repellent fabric and an integrated USB charger Bobby Anti-Theft backpack by XD Design has quickly become a popular choice among travellers. There are now other brands offering cheaper alternatives too, so it’s easy to find a perfect anti-theft backpack that suits your needs and budget.

Full face snorkel mask

The full-face snorkel masks have been around for a couple of years now. In the beginning we laughed about them, then looked with curiosity, and now they have become the new standard. And if you ever tried to fit an old-fashioned snorkel equipment on a child’s face, you will know why these systems are such a big success. This is a perfect present to all the water- and beach enthusiasts.

RFID-blocking wallet

With contactless payment methods becoming more and more common, we hear more and more concerns about their security. If you have such a card (or know a person who does) or know someone who might be happy with a new wallet, then why not consider an
RFID-blocking wallet. They come in so many different sizes and models that you can easily find a perfect wallet for anyone. The cheaper wallets and RFID-blocking sleeves make great stocking fillers too.

DJI Mavic Pro Drone

This is my one exception to the gifts under 100 USD rule. There are so many drones on the market at the moment, but the compact high quality DJI Mavic Pro Drone is considered one of the best at the moment. It’s not a cheap gift, so it’s definitely not for everyone. But if you are looking for a perfect gift for your very special travel and photography lover, this is it. A much cheaper but still very good quality alternative is DJI Spark. These drones are so compact that they almost fit in your palm.

Power bank

If you are using your smartphone a lot, then you undoubtedly know how quickly the battery drains. But when you are traveling, it happens even faster. You take a few pictures in the morning, upload them on Facebook or Instagram, call your friends at lunch, and in the afternoon your phone warns you that you only have 20% of your battery power left.

A few years ago it was unthinkable that you would be able to charge your electronic devices on the go, but every seasoned traveller now carries a power bank. I can tell you that it was a big game changer for me! Not only can you charge your electronic devices anywhere, most models allow you to charge multiple devices at once. The more powerful versions can easily last two or even three weeks. Power bank is also very useful when camping or traveling abroad for a short time – no need for travel adapters.

Wireless card reader or memory card

If you want to be able to quickly share quality photos or videos whilst on the road, consider using wireless memory cards or wireless memory card readers. If you know someone like that, this might be the perfect gift for them too. No need for computer any more – transfer the pictures straight to your phone and on to the social media.

Portable wash bag

I am not a big fan of doing laundry when traveling, but sometimes you just cannot avoid it. A portable wash bag, kind of a modern take on an old fashioned wash board, seems to be the perfect solution for a quick laundry on the road.

Trtl Travel Pillow

Just as the snorkel masks, Trtl pillows have been on the market for a couple of years. They are smaller and lighter than the traditional travel pillows and give great neck support. It’s the perfect affordable gift for any traveller!

Universal travel adapter

Universal travel adapter is a great gift for frequent travellers who want to travel light. Good models can be used pretty much anywhere in the world, they have additional USB connections, etc. And you never have to worry if you have the right travel adapter for your next trip.

Lightweight flight-approved carry-on luggage

More and more airlines are now charging for checked-in luggage and imposing strict weight limits for the carry-on luggage. Especially here in Europe you often find yourself with a 20EUR flight ticket and a 50EUR baggage fee. But how to pack enough for a few days in a carry-on if your suitcase alone counts for half of the allowed weight… A light carry-on luggage is a must for every traveller these days and they are more difficult to find than you would think. There are plenty of cabbin bags that weigh 8-10 lb (4-5kg), but that won’t do. Below is a selection of truly light-weight carry-on bags.

LifeStraw

LifeStraw is an award-wining water purification system that allows you to safely drink any water. It’s a must-carry tool for hiking, camping, and travel emergencies. It’s very light, easy to use, and is not too expensive – a perfect gift for all travellers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Instant Film Camera

Instant film cameras are also not new, but as the quality improves they are becoming more and more popular. Not just among travellers who sometimes use it as a way to make new friends, but even more so at family parties and other events. You can take and print pictures on the go, and it is often a big hit at any party. The only disadvantage is that these cameras are quite bulky, but there are now smaller models as well. The price tag is not too high, so it makes a really nice gift.

Stocking filler ideas under 10 USD

Here is a small selection of fun travel items under 10 USD (at the moment of writing) for adults and kids. All of these are useful travel gifts and can be easily used as stocking fillers.

  1. This a wonderfully useful post. I am sure it is going to help many who celebrate Christmas. I have an odd request. Can you do a post on travel gear that is fashionable? I feel like whenever I travel I have to choose between looking cute for the pictures or being comfortable. That will so help this fashionista out. Thanks!!!

Haha, appreciate your confidence in me, Sana. However, we travel with kids and so I usually choose for practical clothes vs. fashionable. It’s a matter of being able to sit on the ground, carry a child if necessary, not being afraid that the kids will touch my fancy clothes with their dirty hands, take pictures from all different angles, etc. So I am afraid I am not the right person to ask for this kind of advice :).
