Before looking for the best places to stay, you should know a couple of things about the Faroe Islands accommodation.
First, there are just a couple of hotels in the Faroe Islands and accommodations are really scarce. To give you an idea – this selection contains all the Faroe Islands hotels, as well as a couple of guesthouses and hostels, and consists of just 15 options. Obviously, there are many more privately-rented rooms and apartments, but this gives you an idea of what the accommodation situation in the Faroe Islands is like.
Second, most hotels and accommodations in the Faroe Islands are located in Torshavn, on Streymoy island. There are just very few quality lodging options on the other islands.
So if you are traveling in the high season (June to September), you really should book your Faroe Islands hotels well in advance.
As tourism in the Faroe Islands grows, infrastructure is catching up as well. There are more and more hotels and tourist accommodations on the Faroe Islands than ever before, with two new hotels that opened recently. They are both big hotels that almost doubled bedroom capacity in the Faroe Islands and made it so much easier to visit this stunning destination than before. Still, as you’ll see below, accommodation options in the Faroe Islands are very limited and it’s absolutely essential to book your Faroe Islands hotel as soon as you have your travel dates.
In this article, we feature all the best Faroe Islands hotels, but you can also find some guesthouses and self-catering accommodations scattered all over the archipelago. If you want to stay on the smaller islands, these types of accommodations will usually be your only choice.
Now let’s take a look at the best Faroe Islands hotels. In addition, we also included several hostels and best budget accommodations.
At the bottom of this article, you can also find some useful tips and our observations about the best locations to stay in for sightseeing in the Faroe Islands. Find out!
Good to know: All hotels in the Faroe Islands offer free Wi-Fi and most hotels also include breakfast in the rates. However, it’s not always the case, especially at the cheaper accommodations, so keep this in mind when comparing prices.
These are the best hotels in the Faroe Islands:
1. Hilton Garden Inn
Hilton Garden Inn is a brand new 4-star hotel in Torshavn and already one of the most popular and best-rated hotels on the Faroe Islands. It also has a great price-quality ratio compared to other similar hotels nearby.
This is a beautiful modern hotel, set in a higher part of Torshavn, and offering stunning views of the area. It has a nice restaurant and there’s also plenty of parking right at the hotel, which makes it a great choice for those exploring the Faroe Islands by car.
With 130 rooms offering all the modern comforts and great facilities, this is one of the biggest hotels in the area. It’s also one of the few hotels that – in addition to the regular rooms and suites – also has spacious family rooms.
While it is ideal for a self-drive trip in the Faroe Islands, you can also opt to stay here if you are not renting a car. In that case, the hotel can arrange an airport shuttle for you. And once you are there, you can opt for organized tours that will pick you up at the hotel.
2. Havgrím Seaside Hotel 1948
Havgrim Seaside Hotel 1948 is also one of the newer hotels in Torshavn. This is a luxurious boutique hotel set in a historic villa that has been built in 1948 and used to be known as the Commodore’s House. The building has been completely renovated in 2018.
Located directly by the sea, this beautiful property is close to the historic Skansin Fort and within a short walking distance to the old town. They also have a free private car parking and can arrange an airport shuttle service.
Featuring single and double rooms (some with amazing sea views), this is an ideal hotel for singles and couples who are looking for a luxury hotel in Torshavn. It’s also the most expensive of all the Faroe Islands hotels.
3. Hotel Brandan
Hotel Brandan is also one of the newest hotels on the Faroe Islands, opened in 2020.
This modern 4-star Torshavn hotel is focused on sustainability and holds an eco-label. It has 124 rooms and suites, however, they only offer twin and double rooms. Ideal for couples and two friends traveling together, but not the best choice if you are traveling with a big family.
Facilities here include fitness, a sauna, and a hot tub, but most of these have an additional charge.
The location of the hotel, together with a big free car parking area, makes it a great base for sightseeing.
This is also one of the most expensive hotels in Torshavn, but often, breakfast is included in the rate. So take that in mind when making a comparison.
4. Hotel Føroyar
Hotel Foroyar is an older 4-start hotel in Torshavn and has traditionally been considered the best hotel in the Faroe Islands.
However, since the opening of several new hotels mentioned above, Hotel Foroyar is no longer the only really good hotel in Torshavn and is now has some serious competition. For example, the recently opened Havgrim hotel offers much more refined luxury, while the two new Torshavn hotels – Hotel Brandan and Hilton Garden Inn – have the same concept, more modern facilities, and very similar prices…
This hotel is located a bit outside the city center and offers stunning panoramic views over the Torshavn, its surroundings, and the sea. This hotel has a big number of rooms (also family rooms) and ample car parking space. Furthermore, it has a good and reasonably priced restaurant where you can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
We stayed at this hotel in Torshavn before all the new hotels opened and it was a good choice. It might not be an ideal accommodation if you don’t have a car, but otherwise – it’s a great base for sightseeing.
If you take into account the quality and the location, these 4 hotels are the very best hotels in the Faroe Islands. However, they are also quite pricey. Below, you can find more budget-friendly options for your stay on the Faroe Islands. Read on!
5. Hotel Hafnia
Hotel Hafnia is a recently renovated 3-star hotel located right in the center of Torshavn. With simple modern rooms for 1 or 2 people, it’s a favorite among business travelers and tourists alike. Everything in town is just a short walk away and the airport shuttle stops right outside the hotel.
The biggest disadvantage of this hotel is that it doesn’t have its own car parking. It’s a perfect choice for those who are taking guided tours, but not ideal if you are planning to explore the Faroe Islands on your own.
6. 62°N Hotel City Center
62°N Hotel is probably one of the best price-quality 3-star hotels in Torshavn. It’s a simple hotel with a perfect location in Torshavn city center. They have a modern restaurant that also serves a very good breakfast (included in most rates).
With double rooms and suites (some with sea views), this is another great choice for couples looking for accommodation in the town center.
They say that free public parking is available. However, based on customer reviews, it seems that it’s not always easy to find a spot. Furthermore, Torshavn has strict time limits as to how long you are allowed to park and so you have to keep an eye on it or you risk getting a ticket.
7. Hotel Tórshavn
Hotel Torshavn is a simple 3-star hotel that is located in the heart of the city, right at the Torshavn Marina. Set in a lively neighborhood with several restaurants and bars nearby, it’s a perfect choice for those who like to be right in the center of the action.
The hotel has single, double, and family rooms and is a good choice for those looking for a mid-budget accommodation in Torshavn.
Just like the other hotels in the town center, it doesn’t have its own parking. Perfect choice for those who are taking tours, but – once again – not as convenient if you are renting a car.
8. Hotel Streym
Hotel Streym is a somewhat lower-priced 3-star hotel and one of the most popular choices in Torshavn. Located in the town center, it’s just a short walk from the harbor, restaurants, bars, and shops.
This hotel looks really simple and the reviews aren’t fantastic. However, it does what it promises – a good place to stay in Torshavn at a very competitive rate. Breakfast is included and free public parking is available nearby.
9. 62°N Guesthouse Marknagil – Hostel
62N Guesthouse Marknagil is more a hostel rather than a hotel and is one of the most affordable Torshavn accommodations. Most rooms are private, but share a shower and toilet with one other room. Dorm beds are available too. Breakfast is included.
However, it’s located about 20 min walking distance from the city center. While there is free public transportation with stops nearby, you are reliant on bus schedules that are ok during the day, but not after 5-6 PM. Free parking is available and so this is a good budget place to stay in Torshavn for those who are renting a car.
Good to know: this hostel is only open in summer (end of June to mid-August) and serves as a dormitory of a nearby college during the rest of the year.
In addition to Torshavn hotels, there are also several guesthouses and hotels on the other islands of the Faroes. Most of them are really simple, but if you choose to spend a few nights outside of Torshavn, it will often save you a long drive.
So the location might be worth it, even if the hotels are not as nice as the ones in the city. Take a look at the best Faroe Islands hotels that are located outside of Torshavn:
10. Gjaargardur Guesthouse in Gjógv
Gjaargardur Guesthouse in Gjogv was probably our favorite accommodation in the Faroe Islands. Despite the fact that this is a 2-star hotel and the rooms are really simple, it somehow felt like the most authentic place to stay. The guesthouse looks a bit like mountain chalets in Switzerland, but with the traditional Faroe turf roof. Furthermore, its location is simply stunning.
They also have an excellent restaurant. In fact, the food was so good that our kids even ate lamb, which they’d never do at home…
This is a great place to stay for exploring Eysturoy island or as a stop between the northern islands and Torshavn.
11. Hotel Runavík
Hotel Runavík is located in the small town Runavík on Eystoruy island, one of the most central locations on the Faroe Islands. This is one of the few good hotels outside of the capital city and is also much cheaper than Torshavn hotels.
It’s a simple no-thrills hotel, but the location is good and there is a restaurant where you can have breakfast or dinner.
12. Hotel Vagar
Hotel Vagar is the only hotel on Vagar island, where the Faroe Islands airport is located. It’s a very simple 3-star hotel that offers breakfast and – in season – also has a restaurant for dinner.
Reviews aren’t great, but it’s just a short walk from the airport, so if you need a place to stay close to the airport, this is one of the better options. Some people choose to spend their first or last night on the Faroe Islands here and save money on car rental.
The location of this hotel is great for exploring Vagar island and also for a day trip to Mykines island because the boat to Mykines leaves from Sørvágur harbor that is just 2,5km away. Staying here can save you a lot of driving and also expensive Vagar tunnel fees, but facilities are limited, especially if traveling in the lower season.
13. Hotel Nord in Viðareiði
Hotel Nord in Viðareiði is the northern-most hotel on the Faroe Islands. It’s been renovated in 2017-2018 and looks really nice inside, furthermore, it has a restaurant and some rooms also have a private hot tub.
However, the lack of recent customer reviews makes it hard to determine the quality of accommodation and service. A couple of the most recent reviews on Booking.com look promising, however, so this might be a good accommodation option for those looking to stay on Vidoy island.
14. Gøtugjógv Log House
Gøtugjógv Log House is a recently opened private accommodation that deserves a mention because of its fantastic location and great customer reviews. However, this place is accommodation-only and they don’t even offer breakfast, let alone dinner. It’s a small guesthouse with three double rooms and one apartment that can accommodate up to 4 people. However, only the apartment has a private bathroom, whereas the rooms have shared bathroom facilities.
Located in the center of Eysuroy island, just near the tunnel that connects it to the northern islands, this accommodation has one of the best central locations for sightseeing in the Faroe Islands. If you don’t like to switch hotels every night or are looking for a lower-budget accommodation, this might just be the ideal place for you.
15. Giljanes Hostel
Giljanes Hostel is located in Sandavágur on Vagar Island. You can choose between a bunk bed in a dormitory room or a small double room with a shared bathroom. With prices starting from about 33 EUR per bed per night, this hostel is one of the cheapest places to stay on the Faroe Islands.
Where to Stay in the Faroe Islands
If you are not sure which town or place is the best for your Faroe Islands trip, take a look at our suggestions and observations below.
Torshavn – Best Place to Stay on the Faroe Islands
As you can imagine, Torshavn town is one of the best places to stay in the Faroe Islands. This is solely based on the infrastructure. As already mentioned, most hotels are located in the city and it’s also here that you’ll find most restaurants and shops. If you are planning to do any tours in the Faroe Islands, they will also start in Torshavn…
Since Torshavn is somewhat centrally located for most of the sightseeing, most visitors don’t even look any further and base themselves in the city. It’s definitely a good choice for those who are visiting the Faroe Islands for just 3 to 5 days and also for everyone who wants to explore the islands with local guides rather than doing a self-drive trip.
It’s also the best choice for everyone who wants to stay at a really nice hotel and have a bigger choice of restaurants and other facilities nearby.
However, if you are planning a longer trip as we did, there are several drawbacks to this. First, you’ll be spending a lot of time in the car driving up and down to the places you want to see. The time that could be spent sightseeing.
Furthermore, most car rental companies in the Faroe Islands don’t offer unlimited mileage. With just 100km that you are allowed to drive each day, it’s very likely that you’ll go over this limit and will end up paying a big premium for your already expensive car hire.
So while Torshavn is a good base to stay if you are visiting the Faroe Islands for just a few days, it’s not an ideal place to stay if you want to explore the islands that are much further away from the capital.
So, depending on your trip duration, you may want to split your stay between Torshavn and one or two other places that suit your itinerary the best. Below are some alternative suggestions – read on.
Other places to stay on the Faroe Islands
If you are thinking of visiting the northern islands, you should look into staying in Klaksvik for a few nights. There are no hotels here though, just some privately-rented accommodation. The earlier mentioned Hotel Nord in Viðareiði might be a good option too.
Gjaargardur Guesthouse in Gjogv, in Gøtugjógv Log House, or Hotel Runavík are all good options for exploring Eysturoy island and could also be ok for the northern islands. Well, it’s closer than driving there from Torshavn anyway. However, since the opening of the new Eysturoy tunnel, the driving times to Torshavn have been seriously shortened. So you can now easier visit the northeastern islands as a day trip from Torshavn.
If you want to visit Mykines and the main attractions of the Vagar island and not have to drive too much, then you should look for accommodation on Vagar island. It’s also the best place to stay if you have an early departure or a late incoming flight because the international airport is located here. In that case, check out accommodation options in Sorvagur and also in Sandvagur. While the choice of accommodation isn’t great, it might be worth it location-wise.
If you are planning to visit any other islands that are not connected by bridges and tunnels or easy boat connections, you should look into accommodations on those islands. Just keep in mind that the choices are very limited.
