Hill City hotels

Hill City, SD is the second-closest town to Mount Rushmore. The town itself is about 12 miles, 25 minutes driving distance from the National Monument. However, some Hill City hotels are quite far from the town itself, so even closer to Mt Rushmore.

Hill City is the oldest existing city in Pennington County, SD and probably best-known for the Old West Shootout, 1880 Train that runs between Hill City and Keystone.

Just as Keystone, Hill City is a small town that comes to life in the summer season. There are several good accommodation options, and also some restaurants and shops. It’s also very well located for visiting Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and other popular areas in the region.

Below is our selection of the best-rated Hill City hotels. Accommodation choice is very similar to what you find in Keystone, but Hill City hotels often have higher customer ratings than the comparable Keystone hotels. A quick comparison also shows that you get more for your money when staying in Hill City vs Keystone.

Located 20 miles (30 min drive) from Mt Rushmore, Custer is not as close to the Mt Rushmore National Monument as Keystone or Hill City. However, it’s very well located for Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Wind Cave National Park.

This charming mountain town is a bit bigger than Keystone or Hill City, but it’s also a place that comes to life in the high season. With a big choice of outdoor activities, Custer calls itself a ‘playground for all adventure seekers’.

There are several nice dining options, a couple of nice hotels, as well as several motels in Custer. However, lodging prices seem to be higher in Custer than in the other two towns near Mount Rushmore. Below, you can find our selection of the best-rated Custer hotels:

  • Bavarian Inn. This cozy motel with an indoor pool and fantastic customer reviews is the very best price/quality accommodation in Custer.
  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites Custer. One of the somewhat more luxurious Custer hotels, this is a great option for those looking for a bit more comfort. Beautiful spacious rooms, indoor pool, fitness, and complimentary breakfast.

Where would you recommend for the drive from mt Rushmore to Yellowstone. I booked our stay for 3 nights in rapid city. Does that make sense? Day 1 we get in at 10pm.

Friday 23rd of April 2021

Hi Brenda, there are many ways to get to Yellowstone from Rapid City, so it depends a bit on which Yellowstone entrance you want to take. The shortest way seems to be via Buffalo and Cody, about 450 miles, and it takes about 8-9 hrs of driving time not counting any stops (see map). Keep in mind that this is a VERY LONG drive and you'll need an entire day just to get there, so plan accordingly. I'm not really sure what you mean with 'does that make sense?'. 3 days is enough time to visit Mt Rushmore and some of the nicest places nearby, but for Yellowstone, you'll need at least a few extra days + time to get there and back (or wherever you are going afterwards). Here you can find more information on how to plan your trip to Yellowstone + itinerary suggestions. Hope this helps and good luck with the planning!

I would like to go to the best hotel and visit Mount Rushmore. Can you tell me or send me a link to a luxury hotel for a couple's vacation? No kids. It does not have to be super close. We can drive a little distance...

Saturday 27th of March 2021

Hi Rebeca, I think I already said this in my article - for some reason, there are no luxury hotels in that area at all. When I was doing my research, I didn't find any... :( Here are some of the nicer choices: K Bar S Lodge, Ascend Hotel Collection State Game Lodge at Custer State Park and maybe Rock Crest Lodge & Cabins. For a really nice hotel, you'd have to look much further away. But even in Rapid City, most hotels are rather simple mid-budget hotels. Here's one of the nicest ones I found there - Hotel by Curio Collection, Hilton. Not exactly a romantic couples getaway though... Hope this helps.

Hi Elizabeth, this is just a stock image of a nice cabin. We are not allowed to feature images from specific accommodations. But here is a very nice house that you can rent not too far from Mt Rushmore and it looks a bit similar in style.
