Our travel style varies from trip to trip and depending on a destination, but there is one constant: we travel in order to see the world. Road trips are a perfect way to see a lot in a short time. But what if you don’t like road trips, yet still want to travel and see more than a hotel swimming pool?

How to see a lot without going on a road trip

This is what we usually do when we travel in Europe. We stay at one place for a while and then make short sightseeing trips in the area. Europe is perfect for this – no matter where you are, there are always so many interesting places nearby. Belgium, Italy, France, Switzerland,…– these are just a few countries where you can stay almost anywhere and not get bored for at least a couple of weeks.

In my opinion, this is a perfect way for families with children to have a vacation and get to see new places at the same time . The key here is to have enough variation: a day at the pool followed by a day sightseeing, followed by some child-friendly activity… This way of traveling may also make it more accessible to people who don’t often travel or to those who don’t want to spend lots of time to prepare a good road trip.

Choosing the right place as a base for your vacation is the most important factor. First decide on the area you want to explore then put your finger on a map right in the middle of it and look for a nice hotel around there. If you are only interested in sightseeing then you probably want to stay not too far from the main roads – that way you spend less time driving. However, if you also want to have a few dolce far niente days by the pool, do some hiking in the area, or whatever else it is you like doing, then you should look for a location that has all the facilities you want, yet is central enough for the sightseeing.

It’s as simple as this. You get most of the advantages of a road trip without having to pack your suitcases every morning. It also feels more like a vacation rather than a trip. On top of that you have more flexibility and can change your plans daily depending on your mood or the weather.
